Image & Style – what’s the difference?
I’ve been asked many times over the years, why Image and Style? Really, aren’t they the same thing? No, actually they are not.
As an Image Consultant / Personal Stylist it is important for us to be able to define the two. Particularly when working with people who are looking for assistance in the Corporate field, though, personal branding and styling is just as important whether you are looking for a new job, rehabilitation after an operation, going through a separation – whatever the reason, here’s my take on the two:
Image:
This is you and your brand. Who are you? When an Image Consultant or Personal Stylist is working with you they will ascertain aspects of your life to determine the Who. When we think of Image or Brand we imagine the object (in this case, the person) and what that means to us. Who are you and what do you reflect, how do others see you? This is the image and brand you project. Ask yourself a question – what am I projecting and is this the Image and Brand that I want others to see? Therein lies the question – are you sending out the correct signals for what you want to attain in life? When someone imagines you, what image do you think they see?
Does your Image and Brand let you down or is your Image and Brand helping you to succeed and reach your goals. You will be surprised to learn that your Image and Brand could be holding you back.
Style:
As a Personal Stylist, this is the fun part of the role. This is when we work with you to “put on” the clothes that will create the mode of you. Style is something that you can learn. We are not all born with in-built style, but the great news is that overtime when you learn about your true self, your own sense of style will start to develop and grow. Developing your own sense of style is as important as developing your image, it is an expression of who you are.
People express themselves by what they wear. If you wear black pants and a white shirt everyday, this is your style. Your style will evolve and change over the years, this may be due to a change in lifestyle, parenthood, gender, age etc. A good example was my own style as a teenager. I wanted to rebel so was the ultimate Gothic Punk, this style evolved over the years and has gone from Fashionista, Designer junkie but back to who I really am and that is a smart, stylish and glamorous rock chick. My style is easy to wear with fine lines and a touch of drama. It’s my own, create yours and enlist a stylist to help you find the clothes that express who you are. Have fun with it. When you have your own sense of style you will exude confidence and you will look and feel fantastic. People will stand up and take notice!

Fascinating, Susan. I love your posts. I think I’ll go and appraise my image and style now!
Enjoy the journey.
