Dress for Success – Interview Tips for Men.

So, Gentlemen you also need to prepare yourself for your interview.  Remember to add polish and substance to your look.  You want to look Professional and be memorable.  Attention to detail is key.

  • Ensure that your suit is dry-cleaned and that it fits you well.  A quality jacket will fit you well around the shoulders and your sleeves will not be too long or too short, 1cm (min) of shirt should show.  Do you need to invest in a new suit?  Does the fabric look as good as it did when you first purchased it?  Do you feel a million dollars in it?
  • Black is not always appropriate for day time.  (Evening attire is formally black).  Dress seasonally, you shouldn’t be wearing a heavy wool in summer or cotton in winter.  Move to lighter weight and lighter colours in summer.
  • Wearing a tie that is colour coordinated is essential.  Make sure that you research the Company as some prefer their staff to be conservative.  A loud tie may not be appropriate, even if it is on trend and looks great.  Always check the knot of your tie and that it is in proportion to your body build.  Your tie should reach your belt buckle.  Oh, and make sure you wear a belt to complete the look.
  • How long is your hem?  Don’t get caught with your trousers too short, the hem should brush the heel of the shoe or make one dent (crease) at the front on top of your shoe.
  • Shoes.  Always polish your shoes.  Good shoes always make an outfit, bad shoes and you will be remembered for them.  Shoes should be leather with a fine sole.  They should be an appropriate colour match for your suit.  Don’t wear light coloured shoes with a darker suit.
  • Dark socks with a dark suit.  Never wear white sport socks.  Bear legs / ankles should not show either, you socks should be long enough (as should your trouser leg).
  • Brush your hair, don’t over do it with products.  Aftershave or cologne is great, just not too much.  Ensure that your breath is fresh and that you have no sweat / body odour and certainly no marks on your clothing.
  • How are your hands?  Your nails should be clean and neat.  Wear a good watch, don’t wear a plastic sports watch.  Take it off.
  • Remember to carry your Resume in a leather wallet to finish your look.  No old fashioned brief cases, nor should you wear a double breasted suit or pants with pleats.

Think of some of the worlds most stylish men, George Clooney, Bryan Ferry, Yves Saint-Laurent, Paul Newman and Hubert de Givenchy.

George has his grey hair which is always kept trim, he is always in a well fitting suit.  Yves had his signature spec frames that give his look his own attitude and he did say “Dressing is a way of life”.

  1. Hi Susan,

I am so glad that a blog can be seen as a book you put on a shelf and then … later you can return and read all the chapters you missed or need to refresh. Once I make it through the product creation process … I WILL go back to all your great tips! I can see my whole outer self take on a new form just by ‘hearing’ you talk about it.

Thank you for a great post!
